In his Inquirer column, Amando Doronila argues that US President-elect Barack Obama is "no friend to the Philippines" because Obama snubbed President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's congratulatory call.
Amando Doronila is wrong. Since when did we equate Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo with the Philippines? Certainly, Gloria as an unpopular leader comes strong in Barack Obama's radar. Joc Joc Bolante's trial in a Chicago court, put in spotlight by very vocal anti-Gloria protesters outside the courthouse, was too scandalous to escape Obama's attention. Even US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice is no fan of the sitting Philippine leader. Gloria's misconducts are also all over the Web.
If at all, Obama is showing remarkable sensitivity to the feelings of majority of Filipinos who will be outraged if they see the transformational president chummy-chummy with a woman of strong faith who, the world perceives, institutionalized graft and corruption in a third world country to perpetuate her abusive, repressive regime.
Bad signs for Gloria. Three snubs in a row is outside the margin of error. Obama appears to have lumped her together with the leaders of Burma, Zimbabwe and Sudan, who Obama plans to take on (reading his Berlin speech between the lines) and whose congratulatory calls Obama will probably not promptly return.
There is silver lining for Gloria, though. Bill Clinton is her college classmate, and Hillary may just become the US Secretary of State.
Still, a multitude silently waits here now and ready to erupt into cheers if only the "cut and cut cleanly" one-liner gets delivered Obama style--- so hope and change would come to the Philippines too.
Amando Doronila is Wrong
Social networking's first: ZenZuu pays you to sign-up your friends
The Beta stage is over (almost) and it's here. It's not only free membership to a social network that you get. Upstart social network, ZenZuu, pays you to sign-up your friends and it also shares 80% of its advertising revenue with its members.
Scour the Internet and you will find only one social network that pays its members to get sign-ups. ZenZuu promises to be a next generation social networking platform and calls others ancient. Just like in MySpace, FaceBook, Friendster, LinkedIn and others, your also create your own profile and get exposure for your website and business. The difference is that ZenZuu pays you for signing up your friends, who automatically become your downlines. This may conjure pyramidal marketing schemes with variable successes (or failures) in the past. But here you do not lose money. The idea is to make money while you make friends, going by ZenZuu's motto: Make Friends. Make Money. Make Sense.
As additional flavor, ZenZuu even offers to share 80% of its advertising revenue with its members. If you suspect that the big social networks produce tons of money for their stockholders, you are partly right. Front-runner MySpace has 270M members and still growing, producing millions of dollars in monthly revenue. Facebook is far second with 60M but is expected to have 200M by the end of this year. Facebook's founder, another Harvard dropout, recently sold a small part of the company for 240M. He is now worth $3B on paper. ZenZuu's owner is worth a little over $100M, but in his drive to join the rank of the billionaires he likes ZenZuu's members to be happy as well. We will be watching how far this rather aggressive marketing innovation goes. ZenZuu.com's Google PageRank and Alexa ranking are shooting up meteorically, even while in Beta testing. These are the website indicators that advertisers watch before they spend millions just to showcase their products and services. We expect ZenZuu to launch with a bang in a few weeks.
ZenZuu might have set up a precedent. If others follow its example, social networkers will be elated. I would not mind receiving paychecks from MySpace or Facebook or Friendster. Would you?
Meantime, why not be among the firsts to sign up for ZenZuu? Click here..

I am Change, Are You?
By: Harvey S. Keh
Blog Admin note: The author is the chairperson of Team RP, an organization of youth leaders and young professionals who work together for Truth, Accountability and Reform in our country. The group appeals for support in information dissemination through our blog. Publishing this article in our blog is the least we can do in solidarity with the group The disturbing issues in this country are not hard to comprehend from our vantage point, so in fact we ought to do more. Here is the full article.
Last March, I was very fortunate enough to be invited to be the Commencement Speaker of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) in Zamboanga City , one of the biggest state universities in the Philippines . During my brief stay at WMSU, I was able to have a session with 30 of their student leaders who are leading their student council and other student organizations in their school. During this session, I started with a question, I asked them, Who among you here still believes and supports President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo? Around 10 of them raised their hands. Then, I asked again, Who among you here wants the President to resign and step down? Around 14 of them raised their hands. I pressed on and asked again, Who among you here is still undecided? 6 of them raised their hands. Finally, I asked again, Who among you here wants Change and Reforms in our Country and Government?
All of them raised their hands.
When I got back to Manila , I did the same activity with about 25 student leaders from Miriam College in Quezon City , one of the top schools here in Metro Manila. I got the same response from them, 7 were supporting President Arroyo, 12 wanted her to resign/step-down while 6 were undecided. When I asked them who wants change and reform in our Country and Government, all of them raised their hands as well.
What am I trying to say through these two stories and experiences with these Filipino Youth Leaders in our country?
a.) Yes, our country is divided right now in how we view President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. You have on one side, a group supporting President Arroyo despite all the anomalies, allegations of corruption and scandals that has rocked her administration. On the other side, you have groups and highly-influential leaders which have called for her immediate resignation and ouster from power. This then leaves us with a political stalemate since President Arroyo is not weak enough to fall while the Groups calling for her ouster and resignation are not strong enough to push her out.
b.) However, it seems that judging from my experiences in dealing with these student leaders, the people I talk to and the emails I get from Filipinos from here and abroad everyone wants to see Change and Reform in our Government. We are all united in wanting to see positive and lasting change and reforms in our Government.
That is why I think that if we want to be able to help in bringing our nation together towards a common vision which helps move our country forward then this unity should not be based on certain personalities like President Arroyo or our other Government Leaders. Rather, we need to join and work together towards working for concrete and lasting reforms in our Government Institutions that would eventually make it more responsive to the needs of the poor and powerless in our communities. We need to work together towards building, strengthening and transforming our democratic institutions. For example, Isn't it sad that we now have to face a growing Food Crisis when we were once one of the world's top Agricultural countries? This is an indirect effect of the 1 Billion Fertilizer Scam that was allegedly used to fund the election expenses of President Arroyo and her allies. If this 1 Billion Peso Fertilizer Fund together with other government funds was used properly and for the right purpose then we might not have to face this crisis now or if we do, the effect wouldn't be as big as we are facing now.
As such, I'd like to invite every Filipino based here and abroad to join us at Team RP as we try to develop a proactive and dynamic movement that is built and organized primarily by ordinary Filipinos like you and me whose only vested interests is to be able to contribute his time, skills, talents and resources towards pushing for Truth, Accountability and Reform in our Government. How? Allow me to share with you some of our concrete action plans:
For Truth: We hope to push for the passing of a Philippine Access to Information Law (PAIL) that would give every Filipino an opportunity to access government documents especially documents that would show how our hard-earned money is being spent by our government officials. Through this law, greater transparency can be achieved thus and more importantly, we are able to make our government leaders live by the saying that Public Office is a Public Trust.
For Accountability: We plan to file proper charges on Government Officials and Private Citizens who have taken part in Graft and Corruption practices and activities that have bankrupted our government coffers. If we do not do anything to hold these people accountable for their actions and curb corruption, then the cycle will just continue with new faces and sadly, with new techniques. Corruption has to stop because the 30 Billion Pesos that is lost to it every year can amount to provision of basic services that will ultimately uplift the lives of more than 20 Million Filipinos who continue to wallow in poverty.
For Reform: We plan to work and lobby for the extension and improvement of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law which expires this year. We believe that every Filipino should be provided with equal opportunities to be able to own his or her own land. In addition to this, we plan to pursue electoral reforms as early as now by developing projects and activities that will encourage and motivate First-time voters to register so they can exercise their right to choose our next President in 2010.
These are just among our concrete plans towards institutionalizing and working for genuine Change and Reform in our country. Since we are not a personality-based movement, Team RP will continue to push for these ideals and programs regardless of who becomes President, Vice-President, Senators, Congressmen, etc. We are doing this because we believe that many of our Government Leaders have Failed us and that its time for all of us to take control of our own future and work together for that genuine and lasting Change that we all want to see in our country. Let us all stop the all our excuses, iinaction, hopelessness, despair, indifference and complaining, these will all amount to nothing if we ourselves don't move ourselves to do anything for our country.
Change is now. Change starts with each one of us. Hope lies not in our country's leaders and those in power but it rests in every Filipino.
I am Change, are you?

Charter change backers deserved it
Elmer S. Casillan
Published on Page A16 of the November 11, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer
BELINDA Olivares-Cunanan in a series of columns sounded aghast at the Supreme Court decision junking the petition of Sigaw ng Bayan and the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (Ulap). She said it was “vicious,” “scathing” and “extremely strong and condemnatory language.”But, of course, it was. And rightly so. We who have seen through the “gigantic fraud” are exhilarated and feel vindicated by the words used by the Court. The words and the language reflected the feelings of one whose sensibilities have been sourly offended. In this case, the offense struck the learned and legal sensibilities of the high magistrates (well, at least eight of them). Thus the initiative proponents richly deserved what was coming to them.
Law practitioners (like Raul Lambino) are duty-bound to respect the Constitution. But, as a noted constitutionalist saw it, Sigaw was apparently aware of the constitutional deception it was foisting. Its petition hinged not on facts and law but on the politics of power, pressure and patronage. And meaningless motherhood statements.
It is seldom in this benighted nation that we ordinary citizens could lay claim to a triumph of justice. The eloquently reasoned verdict was certainly a rare and exulting triumph. Not to mention a triumph of logic and common sense. Not to mention a triumph over brazen manipulation, unbridled lust for power and the shameless prostitution of the sovereign will. Now, that’s condemnatory language. But it is also called righteous indignation. And righteous indignation is a right reserved for those who have been unjustly offended; not for those who try to hoodwink somebody and get indignant after they are exposed and condemned for their ruse.
Cunanan said the local officials were terribly hurt for being branded as deceivers. Would Cunanan rather call them the paragons of virtue and honesty? No wholesale offense meant to local officials. But even the most well-meaning among them have come to accept cheating, manipulation and deception as part of the game (a.k.a. political exercises) whether it is called elections, impeachment, or people’s initiative. We have seen the manifest despoliation of these democratic enterprises since 2004, the clearest manifestation of which is the continued stay of “the President” in Malacañang.
Cunanan’s fellow Inquirer columnist, Randy David, has noted that Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has “violated all civilized norms of politics.” My previously politically indifferent friends have a more graphic description of the political goings-on under Arroyo; “bastusan” and “garapalan” are words that aptly capture their disgust. They are words that are as strong and condemnatory as the Supreme Court’s verdict.

Friday Activities; Batch '74 Video
Yesterday, two batchmates hosted separate family affairs and invited batchmates as guests. Ted Santy treated us to lunch and early afternoon drinks in their family compound in front of Villa Caceres. Early evening, we moved over to Dante Indaya's residence in Peñafrancia Ave. to celebrate his birthday. Thank you, Ted! Happy birthday, Dante!
Attendance aside from yours truly and the celebrants: Igme Blacer, Edgar Dy, Benjie Cariño, Binong Martires, Tony Añonuevo, Andrew Morano.
During the day, we previewed in Ted's laptop computer a 30-minute video presentation of batch activities. We also played a separate version of the same video in CD-DVD player and it worked just as fine.
The said video cd will soon be distributed to batchmates here and overseas. Ted Santy voluntered to CD-burn the video and Tony Añonuevo will provide the blank cd's out of batch fund and take care of distribution. Binong Martires offered to talk to Nimrod Licup to put the .wmv video file, 143 MB in size, in the web server of the alumni web site and made available for download through the Web.
The said video presentation is still evolving and open to comments and suggestions, deletions, additions and includes highlights from the alumni mass, Joel Cadiz's birthday, and post-Yami funeral gathering at Moraville. Unfortunately, footages taken during Jesse Robredo's birthday got accidentally overwritten in the camera before I could transfer them to hard disk. I am sorry for that; we can only wait for the next opportunity to include Mayor Jesse in our video presentation. Take hold of your copy now and post what you think in our group site or this blog. You are most welcome to contribute materials, video clips or still photographs, with accompanying write up.
ADNAA NORTHEAST CHAPTER PICNIC AT LIBERTY STATE PARK, NJ
July 15, 2006, New Jersey - The ADNAA Northeast Chapter held its annual Picnic at the Liberty State Park, Jersey City, NJ. Headed by its President Boogie Amador, the affair was a success. Among those present were Smokey Carino (HS 62) (remember him? The Air Force pilot who let his jet hover over the Ateneo campus almost kissing the towers of Burns and Santos Hall), and of course the brother of Benjie; Jojo Borja (HS 77), Jojo Amador (HS 77), Ray Altarejos (HS 69) the CEO/owner of the Call Center in Naga located at Paseo de Caceres. Allen Nidea (HS 69), Boy De Leon (HS 69), atbp.
Look for yourselves and try to distinguish the faces of attendees (kun bisto man nindo!)
All-Ateneo Convention - San Diego, CA
It was a privilege to have been able to attend the convention and represented the HS Pillars of 74 and be able to be part of our batchmate Ed Del Rosario's very own "Ed Del Rosario Group of Companies" which was the primary (Platinum) sponsor of the affair. EDR, as he is known here, has successfully built solid holdings here and in Manila having been in the real estate business for almost 19 years. In 1990, he started a parnership that acquired them a franchise with Caldwell Banker. besides the real estate, EDR has ivestments in the structural steel industry in the US but being outsourced to Manila. He is truly the pride of HS Pillars of 74.
I felt so proud having been with him. He is a changed man now (sabi niya), very different from the Ed Del Rosario whom Pokoy F knew in college and law school days.
If you have the chance to go to the USofA just look for him and he will not hesitate to make your visit a very memorable and fruitful one.

Batch 74 Weekend Part 2: Mayor Jessie Robredo's Sunday Birthday Bash
Jessie's late afternoon birthday bash at Aling Conching's Restaurant was an excluvive batch gathering. The event was special because it was the first time ever that Mayor Jess gave a birthday blowout to his batchmates. In attendance were Joel Cadiz, Vic Pardalis, Jack Ayo, Andy Gimpaya, Hector Sales, Bobie Moreno, Bong Bulao, Andrew Morano, Nanding Gomez, Francis Dy, Benjie Cariño, Mon Wong, Binong Martirez, Tony Añonuevo, and Wawa Verdadero, the host.
For the benefit of the curious, the menu consists of pancit bijon, pancit canton, dinuguan, fried spare ribs, puto, cakes, and coke, all in volume quantity, complemented by a small bottle of Emperador brandy, and a small bottle of Torres brandy.
Tony Añonuevo. who arrived late, took the occasion to read a text message from Elmer Casillan: Mag blow out daw si yorme? Kung mag blowout, magbayad daw? This sent everyone delirious with laughter, including the celebrant. Other batchmates who could not attend but only sent text greetings were Andrew Espiritu, Boying Llorin, and Roy Bautista.
Of course, ma blowout saka mabayad pa. In fact, Naga City First Lady, Leny, later joined the group for a few minutes to pay the bill.
Thank you and happy birthday, Mayor Jessie!

Batch 74 Weekend: Saturday Funeral of Wilson "Yammy" Yamson
Last Saturday was black day for Batch 74: May 27 2006 was the day we sent off Yammy to life eternal. In attendance during the mass and funeral ceremonies were Mayor Jessie Robredo, Joel Cadiz, Tony Añonuevo,Edgar Dy, Bobie Moreno, Dante Indaya, Jun de Guzman, Butch Macandog, Egmie Blacer, Andrew Morano, Benjie Cariño, Hector Sales. Andy Gimpaya joined the batch later at the early evening batch gathering sponsored by Andrew Morano at Moraville at Dinaga St.
The post funeral event turned out to be a drinking and sing-along spree, a happy occasion, which Yammy would have wanted it to be.
That same Saturday, Mayor Jessie Robredo was also celebrating his birthday, so he invited the batch members to his birthday blowout at Aling Conching's, which, in deference to the sad occasion, was to be held the following day.

Batch '74 Mourns: Yammy passes away this morning
Ateneo de Naga High School Batch 74 mourns the loss of batchmate, Wilson Yammy Yamson, who dies this morning of liver malignancy. We all remember Yammy as a person full of life and happiness, the life of the party. Batchmates are encouraged to keep posted to this blog to know the plan of the batch to honor Yammy, including schedule of vigils and funeral. For now, we all offer to Yammy the following verse written by Elmer Casillan, our batch poet:
KI YAMMY, PASOLNOPAN
Dos Mil Sais, Mayo Beinte Dos
Todos Los Muertos
Pinapandok mo
An huring sabwag nin kolor
asin laad
na pigmamaanan
Dara kan sirang
nin saldang.
Nagrumirom, nagdolom na
sa solnopan
An padagos na paglaom
siring man
Panginoron, naghuring hangos
antes pinatos
kadikloman
Mantang igwa pang tadang
gayon asin tingraw
Na pigdudusay sa mata
Hihimateon sa
mga huring momento
kan sakong pagmaan
Na kasumpay ka pa
kaining kinaban
Ta'nawon nindo an solnopan
Kun saen pasiring
an daing kasagkoran
Susugon, lamagon nindo
Duman maulanto
an saiyang espiritu
Duman marukyaw
kita nin husto,
nin bwelo
Dawa an aratubangan
duman
Daing irinuman,
daing ngarakngakan
